The Asylum is a company that prides itself on developing and releasing “mockbusters,” which are low-budget films based on high-profile Hollywood projects. Almighty Thor, Transmorphers: Fall of Man, Sunday School Musical, and Titanic II are just a few of the titles The Asylum has offered in the past.
In addition to these no-budget knock-offs, the company also takes great pleasure in releasing ridiculous monster movies powered by long-forgotten actors and musicians. Director Mary Lambert’s Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, for example, starred 80s pop icons Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. Since the company doesn’t shy away from schlock and unadulterated cheese, the two singers square off towards the end of the feature.
Sharknado doesn’t seem much different than its predecessors. Bleeding Cool News describes the film as follows:
“When a freak hurricane swamps Los Angeles, thousands of sharks terrorize the waterlogged populace. And when the high-speed winds form tornadoes in the desert, nature’s deadliest killer rules water, land, and air.”
Given the amount of destruction Hurricane Sandy recently caused on the East Coast, chances are The Asylum doesn’t want to draw too much attention to the project’s plotline. Still, the thought of watching a motion picture featuring sharks that are hiding out inside of tornadoes seems almost too good to be true.
Outside of the plot and a goofy little promotional poster, there isn’t much information about the project currently making the rounds. However, prospective viewers can anticipate this one getting a debut on SyFy at some point in the near future.
The promotional artwork for the film has been embedded below. Would you watch a movie called Sharknado?
