Ryan Murphy: Lea Michele Is ‘Grief-Stricken’ Over Cory Monteith’s Death
No words can describe how the cast and crew of Glee are feeling after the shocking death of Cory Monteith, but show creator, Ryan Murphy is at least trying to explain the immeasurable sadness. In a new interview about the decision to delay Glee’s filming and season premiere one week, Ryan primarily focused on Lea Michele, Cory’s girlfriend who has been absolutely crushed.
Lea Michele: ‘Grief-Stricken’ After Cory Monteith’s Death
“Lea is obviously very grief-stricken,” Ryan admits in an interview with our sister-site TV Line. “It’s been a very difficult thing for all of us, including Lea, to love someone who is an addict. It’s something all of us have been dealing with for many months.”
But Ryan is also quick to point out that Lea has shown unbelievable strength since Cory’s death. “She’s one of the strongest people I know,” Ryan says.
Lea Michele: Adamant That The Show Goes On
The Glee creator goes on to explain how the entire cast and crew looked to Lea when deciding how to handle filming the show after Cory’s death. In the end it was her amazingly selfless decision to only push back the production schedule one week:
She was very adamant that she thought it was best for the cast and crew to get back together sooner [rather] than later so that mortgages could be paid and people could take care of their families. Cory was so beloved that she felt people really needed to be together in this time. So we sort of followed her lead.
Lea Michele: Leaning On Her ‘Glee’ Family
Although Lea’s decision wasn’t completely selfless — Ryan reveals the truth that she has been looking forward to getting back to work so that she can lean on her Glee castmates.
“She wants people to be better and get back to work,” Ryan says. “She wants to be with people. The [Glee] family is her family.”
We are just heartbroken to hear how inconsolable Lea has been since Cory’s death, but she is also proving what an amazing person she really is. The decision to go back to work — where she will constantly be reminded of Cory — cannot be an easy one to make. But she is incredibly strong and also smart to realize that being with her Glee family is the best thing for her right now.
