Swamplands USA' premiere: Animal Planet can get serious

Swamplands USA' premiere: Animal Planet can get serious, Animal Planet aired a 2-episode premiere of "Swamplands USA" on July 9. The network seemed to be answering critics who say that Animal Planet programming should not be taken seriously. In contrast to some of their entertainment-oriented themes such as mermaids, Bigfoots, Chupacabra, and alligator wrestlers, this show is a straight-line wildlife documentary.

The first hour of "Swamplands USA" featured the Okefenokee Swamp that lies in Georgia and Florida. The second program covered the Atchafalaya Swamp in Louisiana, the largest swamp in the United States. Both programs featured the wildlife and overall rhythm of the swamp, but also the history of the swamp and its people.

The current popularity of swamps and alligators has brought shows like "Swamp People," "Duck Dynasty," "Gator Boys," and more. "Swamplands USA" is like none of those shows. It is a well-done documentary that is serene and relaxing. It also provides a good background education for all those other popular shows.
