Toddler found in trunk of car: Missing toddler found dead in car trunk at home

Toddler found in trunk of car: Missing toddler found dead in car trunk at home, The toddler found in the trunk of a car is dead, putting a heart wrenching ending on the search for a missing 2-year-old Wisconsin child on Thursday. According to CBS News on July 18, 2013, the death of the toddler weighs heavily on the minds of searchers today, who searched several times around the car in which the toddler was found in the trunk. No one opened the locked trunk during the search.

Little Isaiah Theis disappeared from his home on Tuesday night about 10:15 p.m. and his body was found in the trunk of the car on Wednesday, after a day of blistering heat. The exhausting all-day search had just been called off when Isaiah's body was discovered in the trunk.

The toddler's father has a automotive repair business at home and that car belonged to a customer. When the customer came to retrieve his car, he opened the trunk to find the body of the toddler inside. The searchers were under the assumption that Isaiah Theis had wandered off, which is something the child was prone to doing.

No one entertained the thought that he would crawl into a car trunk. Members of the search party looked in, under and all around the car, but the car was locked, so they didn't open the car or the trunk. They did look through the windows into an empty car, but it was the trunk that Isaiah somehow got into.

How or why little Isaiah got into the trunk of the car is unknown. The sweltering heat of a 90 degree day locked inside the trunk of a car would not be survivable for very long. If the trunk had been opened and the toddler got in closing it behind him, this would explain how this happened, but could a child of that age and size be able to close a car trunk behind him?

The search consisted of 2,000 volunteers and authorities from both local and state law enforcement. The search party concentrated on the rural area around the home, not on the vehicles in the yard.

Chief Deputy Steve Moe of Polk County's sheriff's office said in hindsight they wished they checked the trunk of the car, but both the trunk and the inside of car had been locked, leading the investigators to believe the child couldn't gain access to the vehicle.
